Citymob was Founded in November 2010 by three local entrepreneurs: Claude Hanan, Luke Jedeikin and Daniel Solomon, and launched in May 2011. Initially, Citymob started of as a standard group buying site and brought cool into group buying with great locally lifestyle deals.  In February 2012, Citymob has closed its standard group buying service and in March 2012 re-launched the site to offer  its daily curated sales.

Citymob aims to “curate the city cool”  by offering exclusive lifestyle deals and discount offers on premium products. The site now offers restaurant discounts in some of the best restaurants in town, movie and theater discounts, discounted designers offers and many other lifestyle related quality deals.

Though the old site was one of the best looking daily deals sites in South Africa, it is safe to say that the new site is by far the best looking daily deals site in South Africa. The site’s user experience is among the best we’ve seen for a daily deals site and it is clear that the guys at Citymob has put a lot of thought into creating the website.

Citymob offers exclusive local daily deals in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban but also have a National deals section that offers country-wide deals. Though it is still too soon to tell how successful will the new website be, looking at the popularity of the deals in the first month, it looks like the new site is going to be a hit. With exclusive, high quality deals, Citymob has the opportunity to make a change in the group buying scene in South Africa.

Groupon the largest group buying site in the world, first established in the US, the site offers great discounts on products and services such as Restaurant Deals, Spa Deals, Massage deals, Vacations and Travel deals, Hair Salon Deals, Fashion Deals and much more…

Expanding its operations worldwide, Groupon has acquired the South Africa group buying site Twangoo in January 2011 and launched its local daily deals service Groupon MyCityDeal (also known as MyCityDeal) under the domain groupon.co.za (The domain was bought from Wicount, which is a competitor daily deals site that have registered the domain in South Africa). At the time, Twangoo was the leading group buying site in South Africa, offering new deals in almost every city in South Africa.

Groupon is currently the largest daily deals site in South Africa and have received the most attention among all daily deals sites. Groupon has received mixed reviews about its level of service and though Groupon’s site’s clearly states that the company will “make things right” in case of issue arising, many people have complained about the level of service received (as can be seen on HelloPeter).

Nonetheless, Groupon is by far the leading site in South Africa both in terms of the variety of deals that it offers and its customer reach. Since the final site was launched in August 2011, it has changed the group buying market in South Africa and has made it grow many times than what it was in 2010. It will be interesting to see how Groupon will advance in 2012 and what new surprises will they bring to the group buying arena.

Groupon also have a very active community on Facebook, with nearly 100,000 members Groupon’s Facebook community is the largest group buying fan page in South Africa and one of the largest Facebook communities in South Africa in general.

Since we launched 6 months ago, we have received several requests from Blackberry mobile phone owners to get a simple version of our HTML daily deals newsletter. Therefore, we are excited to announce that we will soon release a simple, Blackberry optimized, text version of the daily deals mail.

As you can see below, its cooking. Nearly ready to go out of the oven. However, we are looking for a few people that will help us choose what’s the best looking, easiest to use email template.
